Spokane Valley is a city in northwestern Spokane County. It was originally inhabited by the Coeur d'Alene and Spokane tribes, who had been indigenous to this land for centuries before the arrival of Europeans. In 1854, an entrepreneur named Antoine Plante began ferrying settlers across the river with his boat in order to accommodate newcomers. At first it took many years for permanent buildings to form, but as time passed and more people settled here, homes were built along with orchards that could feed them through every season, herds of dairy cows supplying milk all year round, and even modest trading posts like Dishman Store that would supply travelers on their journeys westward.

1895 marked the first year that irrigation became a widespread practice in this area. Apple farming was the primary crop until about 1925, when truck farming began to be utilized. World War II brought with it an aluminum plant, and hundreds of jobs for citizens. In the latter half of the twentieth century, suburban living caused a population boom within the area.

Several incorporations attempts failed before voters finally authorized the creation of a 37-square-mile city in 2002. When incorporation became official on March 31, 2003, Spokane Valley instantly became the ninth largest city in Washington.

There are five land-marks within the Spokane Valley city limits. These include Indian Canyon Nature Park, the Spokane River Centennial Trail, and Riverfront Park. The other two landmarks are the Hatton-Cannon House and Lake Wilderness Campground. Originally home to a pioneer family named Cannon, this house was set to be demolished in late 1960s until Jim Hatton purchased it along with his wife Linda. He made various additions such as an oak floor within the main floor of the building that still stands today. It is currently used for weddings, meetings, parties and special occasions.

The Spokane River Centennial Trail is a multi-use trail that follows along the South Fork of the Spokane River from downtown to the community of Nine Mile Falls. This segment runs 10 miles from SH 195 south to Lincoln Road on SR 291 near Fairwood. Some say this part of it is also called "Fairwood Connector".

Riverfront Park in Spokane Valley is a popular destination for locals and tourists. It is a small park that features a grand staircase to the right of the entranceway into the park which leads down to the Spokane River. The river offers opportunities for fishing, boating, kayaking and other activities.

Neighborhoods in Spokane Valley include Mica, Dishman, Veradale, Otis Orchards, Newman Lake, and Greenacres. All of these areas have something to offer that makes them special and a wonderful addition to Spokane Valley.
